Journalist: Our school requires students to get 60% in

English (Grade12–at least 63-65%). Regarding the methods

of improving students’English study, do you have any good

ideas or plans?

Superintendent :You know as Maple Leaf has always

been, we have 75% of grade 12s take English 12, and their

final score should be 60% or higher. Mr.Jen has suggested that

our goal for the coming year be 63-65% on English 12. This

creates some interesting challenges for us beacuse it takes us

a long time to get our students to get up to 63% on English

12.There is something I think important that we can do.First of

all, we need to speak English more often on campus. I think

it’s easy for students to speak English when they come to class

and talk to BC teachers and speak English in the class. But as

soon as they leave the class, they revert to Chinese. So I think

we should give much more priority to English, get people to

speak English. I’d like to see more of the Chinese teachers

who understand English speak English to other Chinese

colleagues. Because I think it’s good modeling.

We are talking about having English zones on

campus, it’s everybody’s part to speak English.I

think Chinese staff and Chinese students need to

understand that in order for our students to be

successful in Western universities or colleges, for

our students really to have ellite education, we

need to emphasize English in every opportunity.

So if students ride the Qinggui to school, they should speak

English. We need to make the priority.

Another plan is making a good foundation of English in

grade 10, Dr. Luo and Mrs.Wason are looking after this program

this year. What we need to do is the foundations. Give them

more vocabulary. It’s much easier for them to get to the actual

BC classes. We are also increasing the amount of English

classes of the elementary and middle school. We get a

minumum of 12 English classes a week. So we not only try to

emphasize English on the high school campuses, we try to

emphasize English throughout all Maple Leaf Educational

Systems. So we hired Mrs. Watson, the vice-director of ETC.

Mrs. Baird, English coordinator for the systems ;Mrs. Gibbons

& Mrs. Goss, ESL directors. Kathy Zhang is the new person in

change of ESL in Tianjin. Sanya Nastilie in Zhenjiang, Jean Shi

from Wuhan to Chongqing; making many system changes.

The more students speak English to each other, the quicker

they make progress in English.

We are trying to get our students ready for the Western

universities, they need to practice English all the time. They

need to speak with their friends.

Journalist: An English environment is very important for

students to improve English. Do you have any plan in

establishing a good English learning environment in school?

Superintendent:An English environment is really

important. In Tianjin Mrs.Wason &I joined a club called English

Cafe and we took students to a local coffee shop. We sat for a

cup, an hour on Sunday afternoon and spoke English. So we

try to set up an environment. There’s something we are going

to continue to struggle with. That is, until it comes more normal

for Chinese to speak English with other Chinese. And it will

develop good friendships.

Another thing that I think we need to do in Maple Leaf,

quite honestly, I think we need to give English more priority.

Everything we see in Maple Leaf, is Chinese-English, or

English-Chinese.

I really believe so, we should be doing that.

Journalist: Students all have great respect for you, have

you considered encouraging students to speak English

consciously and voluntarily?

Superintendent:I have pretty good knowledge of Maple

Leaf students. Our students who are longing to be successfully

admitted to the top universities should have high English marks.

If people are striving to go to top universities in the world,

then they need to have top English marks.

As supperintendent of the BC program, I can emphasize

how important it is for our students to study English. I think

grandparents and parents give their children a great gift. Besides

sending them to Maple Leaf, they should do everything they

can to improve their English skills.

Excerpts
